Cardiff and District Snooker League the

following Sundays: Aug 10th, Aug 17th, Aug 24th
from 8.30pm to collect registrations. Payment
MUST be made to Steve no later than Sun 24th
August 2008, otherwise we cannot guarantee an
available position.
28/06/08...Photos from the CDSA
presentation night are now available here. The event was held at Park Cons
with Neil Tomkins and Alex Donne being named as
the outstanding players in the Tuesday and
Thursday leagues respectively.
25/06/08...A reminder that two
key events in the league calendar take place this
weekend. On Friday (27th) at
Park Cons club, from 7.30pm, is the
league presentation night (held jointly
with the Cons League). If you have trophies to
pick up, make sure you are there. If you don't
have trophies to collect, come along anyway for a
few drinks. Then on Sunday (29th)
at Mackintosh Sports is the league Annual
General Meeting. Please ensure a
representative of your club is there and if you
want to be active with the league next season let
us know.
25/06/08...I have set up a new
area on the site for photos relating to the CDSA.
You can see them here. If you have anything
CDSA-related to add, please send them to cardiffsnooker@yahoo.co.uk
06/06/08...This years AGM
will be held on Sunday the 29th of June
at 8.00pm in the community centre at the
Mackintosh Sports club Keppoch st. off city rd.
Any proposals must be sent to Spencer Symmons in writing by email or
letter no later than sunday june the 15th. All
members are welcome but there is only 1 vote per
club on any proposed changes to the general
rules.
06/06/08...Well done to Neil
Tomkins who this week won his second Cardiff Open title, 17 years after his
first. Making a triumphant return to CDSA action,
Tomkins beat Caerphilly's Mike Dodd 4-0 in the
final at Rileys City Road.
29/05/08...Kishan Hirani probably become
the youngest ever Cardiff Handicap winner on Tuesday night
after a remarkable performance. In about an hour
and a half he beat both Clive Hudd from Penarth
(in the semi-finals) and Neil Tomkins from
Llandaff (in the final) 3-0 to win the title off
a 21 handicap in his home venue of Rileys City
Rd. Well done Kishan.
29/05/08...The presentation night
is booked for Park Cons on June 27th.
It will be a joint event with the Cardiff Cons
League as it was last year. More details will
follow.
21/05/08...There are two finals
remaining in the season. Details are as follows.
Please turn up and support the players if you
can.
Handicap Singles: Semi and Final played on
May 27th 7pm @ Rileys City Road. Clive Hudd plays
Kishan Hirani, Neil Tomkins awaits the winner on
the night in the final.
Cardiff Open: NEW date - Mike Dodd V
Neil Tomkins, 3rd June 7pm @ Rileys City Road.
21/05/08...Kevin Brown and James
Llewellyn secured the Penarth British
Legion's third doubles title in the last two
seasons with a 3-1 win over Huw Carpenter and Jon
Ryall from Trecenydd in the inaugral Rileys Handicap Pairs final. It was a little
bit of revenge for Brown and Llewellyn whose
Penarth side lost the league title by a single
point to Trecenydd. Carpenter and Ryall went a
frame up and looked more in touch than the
Penarth pair. The second frame was scrappy
however and the Penarth pair had it more or less
sewn up before the colours. The Trecenydd pair
still missed a chance to steal it but it went
1-1. The third frame was the quickest of the
night and a 20+ break each by Brown and Llewellyn
swiftly saw them 2-1 up. Despite a touch of
nerves in the fourth Brown and Llewellyn clinched
a 3-1 win, leaving Carpenter and Ryall with a
second pairs final defeat within a month.
08/05/08...The dates for the Cardiff
Handicap singles have now changed. Please see here for details.
08/05/08...The University
Graduates have won some consolation for
their disappointment at the end of the league
season by winning the Tuesday Knockout Cup final against Savoy. This final
also went all the way to the deciding frame with
Rob Hayes overcoming Roy Lawrence to bring home
the University's first ever CDSA Tuesday league
trophy.
08/05/08...Congratulations to youngsters
Twm Jones (Penarth) and Luke
Pittman (Canton Libs) who won their
first ever CDSA title by beating Huw Carpenter
and Jon Ryall 3-2 in an exciting Cardiff Open Pairs final. Jones and Pittman won
the first before the Trecenydd pairing won the
next two frames to take the lead. Jones and
Pittman won the fourth frame convincingly to take
the match into a decider and despite finding
themselves 40 down in the final frame came back
to win on the pink. Carpenter and Ryall will now
hope to win their second doubles final, the Handicap Pairs, where they face more
Penarth opposition.
30/04/08...The Cardiff Open final will be between Neil
Tomkins and Mike Dodd
after both players eased through the semi-finals
with 3-0 victories over Graeme Prance and Wayne
Hatton respectively. Dodd made a terrific 93
during his win. The final will be held on 20th
May and we would encourage league members to
attend for the climax of the league's most
prestigious singles event.
30/04/08...The Thursday Knockout
Cup is still going on, with the finals
to be played between Wellington Rileys 'B' and
Fairwater Cons (Division One) and Cathays Cons
and South Wales Snooker (Division Two). Cathays
Cons lead SW Snooker 3-2 after the first leg,
with the first leg of the Division One event yet
to be played.
26/04/08...Dates for the final stages of the individual singles
and doubles have been confirmed. All will take
place at Rileys City Road. The first of these is
the Cardiff Open semi-finals, NEXT TUESDAY April 29th.
Full details of the dates can be found here
21/04/08...This from our Trecenydd
colleagues....big match at Trecenydd snooker club
this coming week, Wed. 23 April. Best of 5 frames
7.30 start. CDSA players Huw Carpenter v
Richard Oliver to decide who will take
the one remaining place in the Welsh under 19s.
international team for the Home International
Championship. Local interest is running high.
Believe it or not, there is no charge for
spectators, everyone welcome.
11/04/08...Please note that any
dates for singles and doubles finals on
the website were just indicative. No dates have
been agreed yet and players will be informed as
soon as possible about the arrangements.
09/04/08...Many congratulations to Trecenydd
Snooker who have won their first ever Cardiff
and District Snooker League title after pipping Penarth
British Legion by just one point
in the most enthralling finish to the most
amazing season in recent years. They went into
the final game needing a win against the
Mackintosh to make sure of the title. As it
happens Trecenydd stumbled at the end, and the
Penarth players were well aware that they were 4-0
down at the Mackintosh. When Trecenydd
clinched the final frame up in Roath, Penarth
(who were 3-1 up against Aber & Seng at this
stage) knew that they needed to win the final
frame to take the title. The finish was
heartbreaking for Penarth as Tony Palkowski came
back from a snooker down on the pink in that
crucial last frame to pot the last pink and black
of the league season and send the title to their
valleys rivals. It was a fitting end to an
amazing season that saw four teams head to head
almost from start to finish. Trecenydd's late
surge and their recent 4-1 and 5-0 wins over the
Uni Grads and Llandaff were the clinching factor,
although the determination of Mackintosh and Aber
& Senghenydd to play their hardest in the
final game of the season - meaningless to them -
meant more twists and turns, and showed a real
respect for the league. It's Trecenydd's title,
and therefore well done to messrs Carpenter
(x2), Wicks, Oliver, Davies, Dobson, Gourlay and
Bazzard (and anyone else who played for
them this year) as they take their place on the CDSA Roll of Honour.Well done also to
Neil Tomkins for taking the highest
break
prize for his 122 earlier in the season.
02/04/08...And then there were two. No
overall update available yet but worth mentioning
that the Tuesday League title race is down to two
teams - Trecenydd and Penarth
British Legion - after a monumental
'Grand Slam Tuesday'. Trecenydd edged themselves
to the verge of the title with a stunning 5-0
thrashing over long-term leaders Llandaff. They
can't celebrate yet though as Penarth came back
from 2-0 down to edge the Uni Graduates 3-2 on
the final black and ending the Uni's title
dreams. If Trecenydd win next week against the
Mack, they are champions. Lose and a big win for
Penarth against Aber & Senghenydd will send
the title down to the Vale.
02/04/08...There has been a late
revision to the Thursday Division One table with an alteration
to the points deduction for Rumney BL 'B'
resulting in University 'B' moving back into the
bottom two.
27/03/08...This week saw the first leg
of the Thursday Knockout
Semi-finals. In Division One Taffs
Well's home advantage in the first leg
was very important as they won a very close first
leg 3 -2 against league champions and favourites
Wellington B. Fairwater Cons suffered a shock
loss to outsiders Rumney BL 'B'
3 - 2 at home. In Division 2, Cathays
Cons won a close match 3 -2 and now the
favourites would like to press their slender
advantage when they travel down to Roath Labour
next week, difficult to pick a winner at this
point. In the other semi SWS
impressively beat an off form Penylan Bowls 4 - 1
and are surely favourites to ram home the
advantage next week in Tremorfa. A
reminder that if it is a tie at the end of the
second leg (next Thursday) then a sudden death
play off will decide the winner.
26/03/08...The most exciting season of
league snooker in the world, anywhere, in any
year, saw another twist in the tale yesterday as Trecenydd
edged into the Tuesday League favourite spot after
trouncing Aber & Senghenydd 5-0 and Llandaff
struggled to a 3-2 win against Rileys 'A'. Penarth
stayed in contention with a 3-2 win against
Rileys 'B' who turned up to compete despite
having only two players - and subsequently won
both frames. "Grand Slam Tuesday" next
week will have a massive influence on the
destination of the title with what could be a
title decider between Trecenydd and Llandaff
taking place whilst at the Students' Union the
Uni Grads and Penarth face each other to
see which one can cling on until the final week
and which one will slip back into the abyss
(otherwise known as fourth place). A quick
mention for Jason Hewitt who
knocked in an 80 break - that makes it a ton, an
80 and a 70 in about 5 weeks back in league
action after a year out.
22/03/08...Congratulations to Wellington
Rileys B who clinch the Thursday
Division One title on the final day, beating
Taffs Well A 3-2. Fairwater
finish runners up as they win 3-2 at home to Uni
B, whilst Frames A beat Gower 3-2. At Rumney, the
B side beat the A side 3-2, but after playing an
unregistered player, Rumney B lose their win and
6 points. Canton A finish off the season with a
4-1 win at Uni C. Alex Donne's
90 earlier in the season was the highest
break.
In Thursday Division Two, Wellington 'A' finish
14 points clear as Taffs Well B fail to show up
for their match. Runners up Cathays Cons lose 3-2
to South Wales Snooker, who take fourth place.
Roath Labour cement third with a 4-1 win against
Canton B and Savoy also finish the season with a
win, beating Penylan Bowls 3-2. John Collins'
very recent 65 took the high
break
prize for the division.
The Match Secretary (Neil Fairbrother) sends his
thanks to all the guys (mostly the captains) who
sent results in so quickly and therefore made it
possible to update the league as early as
possible each week this season. So, with a final
note of congratulations to Wellington Rileys for
their double title win in the Thursday League, we
only have to see now whether they can add the Divisional Cup to their haul.
20/03/08...Remember as the Tuesday
League draws to a thrilling close you can hear
all the gossip from the horse's mouths on the CDSA
Discussion Forum hosted by Talking Balls.
Match reports and discussion of both Tuesday and
Thursday leagues are posted on the forum as well
as discussion of professional events and other
non-snooker topics such as the Six Nations. Full
instructions on how to join here. It's entirely free.
20/03/08...With just three weeks to go Llandaff
leapt back into pole position in the Tuesday
League
this week as Uni Grads and Penarth both slipped
up - at the same time allowing Trecenydd to
rejoin the chase. Llandaff beat Caerphilly 3-2
and now stand two points clear. Although Uni
Grads remain in second they must now be counted
as the outsiders of the pack after their 4-1
hammering at Trecenydd, since both Trecenydd and
Penarth have a game in hand on the top two.
Penarth were beaten 3-2 at Savoy. With three
weeks to go, all eyes are on April Fools' Day,
which could become D-Day for the title (or Grand
Slam Tuesday in Sky TV terminology) as Llandaff
travel to Trecenydd and Penarth visit the
University. Llandaff sit out the last game of the
season and will be looking to be more than 6
points clear by then - but it look set to go to
the wire.
The title race in Thursday
1 goes
down to the wire as Welly B slip
to a surprise defeat to Rumney A. Frames
A keep their title hopes alive with a
5-0 defeat of Rumeny B (who turn up with 1
player). With Fairwater and Frames level, 5
points behind Welly B, they each have an outside
chance of the title if Welly B fail to pick up 2
frames at Taffs Well next week and they dish out
heavy defeats. Fairwater play Uni B, whilst
Frames A visit the Gower.
In Thursday 2 this week, new champions Welly
A celebrate with a 3-2 win against
Savoy, whilst Roath Labour beat Taffs Well B 5-0
and South Wales Snooker beat Rileys LG 4-1.
12/03/08...Welly B are within reach of
the Thursday division one title as they beat Frames
A 4-1. If they win against Rumney A this week
they will seal the title. Fairwater kept up some
pressure with a 3-2 win against Gower, Taffs Well
A beat Canton A 3-2, and both Uni sides are
beaten 4-1 by both Rumney sides.
Welly A are the new champions of
division 2 in their bye week as Cathays Cons
beat Rileys LG 4-1. Only a 5-0 win would have
kept the Cathays side in contention. Savoy pick
up a 3-2 against Roath Labour, and South Wales
Snooker beat Penylan 3-2.
08/03/08...After weeks of sorting out,
the position for the Thursday Division One Knockout Cup has been resolved. Wellington
and Fairwater qualify from Group
B. Group A was less straightforward with three
teams tied on three wins. Rumney B
qualify through virtue of winning more frames,
but Taffs Well and Canton
Libs 'A' will need to battle out a
play-off to resolve who join Rumney in the semis.
(Just a footnote, but congratulations to Uni C
for finishing ahead of their more 'senior'
clubmates!)
08/03/08...The Rileys Cardiff Open quarter-finals
took place this week. Newcomers to the CDSA this
season Neil Tomkins and Mike
Dodd booked their places in the semis
with wins over James Llewellyn and Spencer
Symmons respectively, Dodd making a 73 break.
Tomkins will face Graham Prance
who marked his return to the CDSA with a
semi-final spot following a win over Rob Hayes.
Dodd will face Penarth's Wayne Hatton
who reached his first ever CDSA singles
semi-final after whitewashing Brian Rees 3-0.
02/03/08...Sorry for the delay in
reporting on the Rileys Cardiff Handicap Pairs, which took place last
week. The second semi-final took place today and Kevin
Brown and James Llewellyn of Penarth
reached their second pairs final in two years
after defeating Joe Merola and Ben Chung from the
University. Their final opponents have even more
cause to celebrate as Huw Carpenter and
Jon Ryall reached their second final of
the season (they are also in the Open Pairs final) after beating their
team-mates (and in Huw's case, brother) Rhys
Carpenter and Shaun Wicks in the semis.
02/03/08...Llandaff Institute
regained the lead - and favourites status - in
the Tuesday League this week after a 5-0
demolition of the University 'A' side, who failed
to do a favour for their senior side, the Grads,
who unexpectedly lost 3-2 at Caerphilly.
Elsewhere a controversial outcome in Trecenydd
resulted in them being awarded a 3-2 win against
Savoy which keeps them in touch.
